Our Research Mission: From Radiation–Matter Interactions to Space Exploration
At ElsaesserLab, we investigate how radiation and extreme environments affect matter – from organic molecules and biological systems to materials for space applications. Our interdisciplinary research combines experimental space physics with physical chemistry, materials science, biophysics, astrochemistry and astrobiology.
We use laboratory irradiation, planetary simulations, advanced spectroscopy and nanoscale chemical imaging to understand fundamental processes, molecular transformations and material stability under space conditions. Through experiments such as the ESA-selected OREOcube and Exocube missions, we extend these investigations beyond the laboratory to the International Space Station, small satellites and future lunar and deep-space missions.
